Why Should I Work with a Life Coach? 


Compared to other kinds of personal development and activities to improve mental wellness, life coaching is a relatively new kid on the block! Life coaching came to be in the 1980’s, as an extension of sports mental coaching. Athletes were receiving coaching to work on the mental aspect of their game, and the results were profound. It only made sense to extend this coaching to other careers (business, entrepreneurs, and many more) and to, well, life. 


Athletes, CEO’s and brilliant entrepreneurs can have all of the skill and talent in the world, but (and it’s a large but) if they don’t have the ability to manage stress, anxiety and inevitable obstacles that will come their way, there is no way they will reach their potential. If highly skilled, experienced actors, singers and dancers lack the mental skills to deal with rejection, disappointment and nerves, their careers (and more importantly, mental health!) will greatly suffer. 


Life coaching skills are life skills. Part of why Betsy and I are passionate about working with the next gen, is that we believe that tools to calm anxiety, build confidence, speak to yourself kindly, manage life’s obstacles, etc., should be taught in school. These skills are just as important as many things taught in high school (if not more… a lot more!). However, it is never too late to start working with a coach. I personally didn’t start until I was in my early 30’s and my whole life transformed. 


Some people ask: what is the difference between a life coach and a psychotherapist? That is a great question. The best possible outcome is that you work with BOTH of us. However, we know that isn’t feasible for everyone right now. So, here’s a great analogy to help you decide which one is right for you. You are at the bottom of a mountain. When you work with a psychotherapist, you stay at the bottom for quite a while, possibly even working backwards a bit. This is so important, because to move forward you have to know and understand where you have come from. With a life coach, we are going to start moving right away! We might spend our first session at the bottom of the mountain, and build skills to keep climbing every session. It is our goal to fill you with confidence, authenticity (knowing yourself better!), passion for your unique life, and tools to set goals to live the life of your dreams. Coaching is all about you. We will take what you have and make it even better. We will help you navigate the inevitable obstacles life throws at all of us. We will help you to visualize your dreams and then teach you how to break them down into tangible goals that excite you. You can do this. You can have an amazing, successful, exciting life!
